°1958, Eeklo (Belgium), Lives and works in Gent (Belgium)
Since the early 1990s, Dirk Braeckman has built up a very recognizable oeuvre of enigmatic photographs. Large prints in black and white and shades of grey reveal ambiguous images: desolate spaces, reflecting wall paper, a curtain, a vague painting, a fragment of a nude. Braeckman avoids the anecdote, focusing on atmosphere, texture and suggestion. The photographs have a snapshot-like, ephemeral quality, but every image is actually composed with utterly precision. Every detail is important here: the cropping, the light, the colour and its texture, the lack of focus, as well as the material on which it is printed.
