Cel Crabeels makes use of the audiovisual media to explore the phenomena of identification, documentation, and the artistic use of them. The videos, audiovisual installations, documentary projects and photographs Cel Crabeels is bringing forward reveal a fascination for obscuring the divisions between representation and reality, fiction and documentary, private and public, critical observation and autobiography.
His early works revolved around the existence and persistence of unspoken rules and codes, imposing, obeying or violating limits and norms. Red tape is an idiom that refers to excessive regulation or rigid conformity to formal rules.
