GuillaumeBijl_b°1946, Antwerp. Lives and works in Antwerp.

During the past 20 years Guillaume Bijl has made installations referring to the phenomenon of “cultural tourism”. Without sparing anybody, he questions the artificial values of our “civilization” and thus brings about a reflection on how History and Culture are presented visually. We spend the weekend visiting places of historical “interest”. The variety of these installations not only exposes the banality of cheap culture and mass tourism kitsch (“Wax Museum” at Documenta in 1992, “The History of Prehistoric times”, “The History of Erotism”…) but also focuses, ironically, on more sophisticated pseudo-intellectual themes (“Composer Memorial Room”, “5 Historical Hats”, “8 Historical Lederhosen”… “Voting Booth Museum”).
